Tron: Legacy GEEKsplosion!

TRON: Legacy releases on Blu-Ray and DVD today and for the first time on Blu-Ray, TRON: The Original Classic Special Edition (with a screen grab from the digitally remastered original pictured above).  Since Tron is a property of Disney, it releases with an explosion of awesomeness.  A quick disclaimer is that I have seen the 1982 TRON, but have yet to see TRON: Legacy.  From what fans of the original have said, it does not stack up to the classic, but neither did Star Wars 1-3.  This is not a review of the movie, but one happy geeks luck opportunity to share some great extras that I just can’t keep to myself.

I am the kind of moviegoer who wants to know everything about the movie.  I want to see the trailers, the plot points, the costumes, the villains, the special effects, etc… I love the fact that IGN.com goes through hot trailers and discusses the possibilities at length.

A trailer, and a trailer review is only what was available before this movie hit theaters.   There is something to be said about DVD extras.  Commentaries aside, the best extras, to a info-geek like me, is to see the costume sketches, a behind-the-scenes featurette, or set design videos.  There is something amazing in seeing what the initial concept are for people, places, and vehicles looked like and how they eventually came to be what we enjoyed on the big screen.


However, any Blu-Ray release has video extras, but TRON: Legacy has the power of the Disney machine behind it.  Having been to Disneyland twice in the last 8 years, I can attest to the unmatched clout that it has.  With a property like TRON, there couldn’t just be a disc release, but they have a LightCycle Experience.

I played this a bit, and it is quite cool.  You get to create your own character, and ride either the Light Cycle, or the cool personal jet things. Included below are a whole bunch of sweet extras I can’t help but include in this post mostly because I can, but also because they are sweet, and I’ll be picking up the Blu-Ray this week!

Conclusion: At the end of the day, TRON (1982) was groundbreaking.  TRON: Legacy, though unable to be equally as groundbreaking, has plenty of pretty shiny blinking pieces of eye-candy to keep even a casual techie entertained.
